No more foreign words on signs in Yaroslavl. They have been banned since November 2024.
This change was introduced in the resolution of the Mayor’s Office of 2017 on the placement of information structures. According to the new rule, foreign words can be used only in cases where they are registered as trademarks in Russia or provided for by international treaties.
In February 2023, a law appeared prohibiting the use of foreign words with Russian synonyms in official speech. The exception is cases when there are no analogues. In October 2023, a bill was introduced to the State Duma prohibiting the placement of inscriptions and information about goods in languages other than Russian, but it has not yet been adopted.
Some cities, such as Saratov and Krasnodar, have already implemented similar bans on the use of foreign words on signage.
