Passenger Rights During Flight Delays: What You Need to Know

Права пассажиров при задержке рейса: что нужно знать

On July 28, 2025, Aeroflot’s service disruption affected more than 20,000 passengers, but on July 29, the airline returned to normal operations. The Russian Union of Travel Industry reminded passengers of what to do in case of flight delays.

According to the rules of air transportation, the delay begins at the departure time specified in the ticket.

In case of flight delays, passengers have the right to:

  • cancel the flight and get a refund;
  • get compensation for moral damage and losses;
  • recover a fine from the carrier — 100 RUB per hour, but no more than 50% of the ticket price (if the reason is not force majeure).

When waiting for a long time, passengers are provided with free services:

  • drinks — after 2 hours of waiting;
  • hot meals — after 4 o’clock, then every 6 hours during the day and 8 hours at night;
  • hotel and transfer – if the delay is more than 6 hours at night or 8 o’clock in the afternoon,
  • if necessary, luggage storage and access to the mother and child room for a passenger with a child under the age of seven.

While some flights are delayed, others are waiting — that’s where you can go next time.
