How to prepare for a trip with a pet
Spoiler alert: It’s not as difficult as it seems.
- For transportation on any transport, you will need a convenient carrier: it is better to let your pet get used to it in advance.
- Don’t forget to buy the usual food, a bowl, and drinking water.
- Bring diapers, favorite beds (pets are not allowed to sleep on beds in hotels), and delicious toys for a travel companion.
- Prepare a first-aid kit in advance. It should contain antiemetics, painkillers, antihistamines, antipyretics, as well as enterosorbents, eye and ear drops, flea protection products and antiseptics. It would also be good to find out the addresses and phone numbers of local veterinary clinics in advance.
Well, now let’s move on to the specifics of traveling with a pet on different types of transport.

By train
There are main requirements for transporting small pets: the animal must be in a lockable, comfortable carrier, the size of which in the sum of three dimensions does not exceed 180 cm + you need to issue a transportation document (this can be done online).
The fare in the reserved seat is paid additionally, and nothing is charged separately for the purchase of all seats in the compartment. When ordering a ticket online, pay attention: if there is no “animal transportation allowed” icon in the form of a paw in any carriage, then you will not be able to take a furry friend there. Also, the transportation of small pets is carried out taking into account the requirements of veterinary regulations established by the Rosselkhoznadzor, while veterinary documents do not need to be presented.
The identification mark for the possibility of transporting a pet on the Russian Railways website is an icon in the form of a paw.
Large dogs will have to be transported in a separate compartment with an escort and fork out for the full cost of unoccupied seats if they remain.
On an airplane
Check in advance whether it is possible to transport an animal on the selected flight (some companies have this on their website, for example, S7, but Aeroflot will need to make a separate request). Plus, there are restrictions on the total number of animals transported for each flight. It depends on the weight and dimensions whether your beloved friend will fly in the cabin or in the luggage compartment. After the airline’s response, we pay for the transportation of the furry friend, buy a ticket, purchase the necessary carrier and prepare the documents for him.
The animal must have a veterinary passport with vaccination marks and a valid rabies vaccine (if it is not available, it must be given at least 21 days before the trip). The owner also needs to visit the animal disease control station in advance and inspect the pet: the doctor will mark the certificate and allow the flight. In Moscow (and almost everywhere else in the country), you will need information about the results of laboratory tests for parasites conducted no earlier than 5 days before the trip to an accredited laboratory.
Placement
The issue of housing is no less important. Take care of the pet-friendly hotel in advance and specify all the details of the accommodation conditions. Examples are attached to each destination, all of them can be booked on the Island. When searching, set the “Allowed with pets” filter.
Filter “Allowed with pets”.

Baikal
Baikal is endless, and to experience its beauty, you need to fly either to Irkutsk or Ulan-Ude. On the Irkutsk side are the mysterious island of Olkhon and Listvyanka, where the tourist infrastructure is well developed and there are many pet-friendly hotels. And from the capital of Buryatia, there is more wildlife: it will be fine with a tent.
Baikal is almost one big nature reserve, so it is important to be guided by the rules of staying in the area. For example, it is not prohibited to take dogs with you to a specially protected natural area, but pets must be on a leash and, if necessary, in a muzzle. Nature reserves are rich in various wildlife, and a dog may have a hunting instinct: to devour a bird, a small animal, or to provoke a large predator such as a bear. It is also worth paying attention to ticks, because specially protected natural areas are not treated from these parasites. There are no problems outside the national parks — enjoy the natural beauty with a four-legged friend.

Altai
is another region with pristine nature, where spacious meadows are adjacent to large-scale mountains, noisy rivers and lush forests, and photogenic glamping — with modest private houses.
The main places where you can go with a dog: stunning beautyGeyser Lake (emerald and blue circles in it are created thanks to springs gushing from the ground, lifting layers of clay); Chuisky highway (one of the most beautiful highways in the whole world); alien mountains near Mongolia called Mars, the fascinating Katu-Yaryk pass. Before heading to hard-to-reach tracks, mountain peaks with a helicopter ride and lakes by boat, it is better to check with the guides if it is possible to take a furry friend with you. For example, you can’t go camping on the Multin Lakes (except for the lower ones) with a four-legged person.

Bashkiria
This region will surprise even an avid traveler with its natural resources: noble single villages, gorges and caves, lakes, mountains, ecotropics and many more interesting things are located here. The main one in these territories is Bashkiria National Park, with broad—leaved forests of the Southern Urals stretching over 250 million years old. According to the latest information, it is possible to visit the park with dogs, but the animal must be on a leash. Together with pesel, it’s great to see karst caves and tracts, walk trails to the sacred Talla Mountain or to Vysokaya Mountain.
Don’t miss the opportunity to climb the sacred Iremel Mountain to enjoy the wild places and make a wish. There are several isolated mountains in the district, which many millions of years ago were coral reefs in the waters of the Perm Sea, there are only three shikhans: Toratau, Yuraktau and Kushtau. The ascent is not difficult, but picturesque. If you want a relaxing holiday in the countryside, go to Lake Bannoye, the deepest lake in the republic, with excellent fishing, nice houses and all the necessary infrastructure.

Visiting national parks
Before visiting protected areas and national parks, we recommend checking the rules of the visit and the possibility of coming with a dog in advance. Also, study the route in advance: in case it turns out to be too ambitious for a pet.
In many national parks, they require keeping a dog on a leash, cleaning up after it (and not only in parks, this is a general rule, in some places there are fines for negligence in this matter), and treating ticks and mosquitoes. In parks where there are no strict requirements, a dog can roam around, so it’s cool to have a GPS tracker to track its location. And the pendant with the name and contacts of the owner — how about without it?
Vladivostok
Vladivostok has huge cable-stayed bridges, hills and fogs, seafood delicacies and many must-see locations. However, dogs are not allowed everywhere. For example, you can’t visit the gorgeous Petrova Bay with an animal — they protect the local deer population here. But where to go then?

Caucasian Mineral Waters
Going to Kavminvody is always a great idea! There are impressive mountains, vibrant cuisine, Caucasian hospitality and places that fall into the very heart.
We recommend considering Kislovodsk. Firstly, there are sanatoriums where you are allowed to come with a pet and you can combine visiting natural beauty with improving the body. Secondly, Kislovodsk has one of the most spacious parks in the whole of Russia. Kislovodsk National Park allows visiting with pets, but they must be on a leash. There are 6 hiking trails of varying difficulty, several mountain peaks in the upper part of the park, bizarre groups of rocks, a narzan gallery with healing water and much more on a total area of 966 hectares.
When you explore everything in the city, go with your pet to explore the area. The most picturesque places are the Bermamyt plateau (it’s a difficult road here, so we recommend traveling only by SUV and with a local guide) and the Jily-Su tract.
