“Aulak”: Tatar breakfast
- What to try: Tatar breakfast, viburnum pie, veal dumplings.
- Address: Kazan Kremlin, 5 Sheinkman Passage.

You can easily combine tasting Tatar dishes with a visit to the Kremlin. Start your day at the Aulak Cafe. They serve national dishes for breakfast: pancakes from the oven with kaymak, donuts, homemade flatbreads, and aromatic herbal tea. Even the raff is prepared in a Tatar style! You can order a breakfast for two, which costs 2,800 rubles.
At Aulak, you should try the famous Tatar triangles, echpochmak. They usually have a meat filling, but this cafe has taken a different approach. Echpochmak is served here as a dessert: it’s not just any echpochmak, but a golden one. Inside, it’s filled with chocolate and prunes, making it a sweet treat that pairs perfectly with herbal tea.

Even those who have not yet visited Kazan have heard about this restaurant serving Tatar cuisine. The establishment, which has been operating on the embankment for many years,It has moved to the territory of the Kremlin. The interior has become more laconic and modern, and the space itself has become brighter. It is worth noting the beautiful and stylish handmade tableware, which is worth exploring endlessly.
The menu is such that you won’t leave hungry. It seems to have collected everything that the Tatar cuisine is famous for: classic echpochmak, horse meat steaks, manty, dumplings for the groom (very small, with thin dough), and a couple of dozen other dishes. It’s better to go to Chiram with a large group of people to enjoy a large-scale tasting. The tradition of afternoon tea is strongly associated with London rather than Kazan. It is no longer a lunch, but it is not yet a dinner. Aesthetic multi-tiered shelves are brought to the table, on which snacks are displayed: sandwiches, profiteroles, cakes, and sweets. In the Ak Chynayak tea house, another interesting establishment in the Kremlin, almost everything is the same, but with a bright local accent. On the shelf there are favorite Tatar desserts like chak-chak and talkysh-kaleve, plus homemade marmalade and perfect strawberries with sugar. The interior is conducive to photo shoots and contemplation: there is even a fireplace.

It’s a place where you can slow down and savor the atmosphere and flavors. The creators claim that the concept is inspired by their travels around the world, but Europe is clearly the main focus. The menu includes goujères with various fillings (French pastries), onion soup, several types of pasta and pizzetta, as well as a variety of vegetables. The food is delicious, well-executed, and impressive.
